Other Characters: N/A

Character Name: Pitch Black
Series: Rise of the Guardians
Age: MANY many years old. Well over a millennium.
From When?: Post Movie

Inmate/Warden: Pitch would be an inmate. He’s a stubborn spirit who doesn’t take to change very well. I’m sure, in a setting like this, there would be a lot of opportunities for him to grow and develop. He is nowhere close of being of Warden material.

Item: N/A

Abilities/Powers:

Black Sand/Nightmares:
This is his main source of power. The black sand is used to make weapons and items. For example, in the movie, he created a scythe and a bow and arrow with the use of his black sand, but one can only assume he can use this sand in many ways. He can also use the sand to make many other creatures.

The most common creature he makes with his sand are called “Nightmares.” They are large female horses, which do reconnaissance work for the Boogeyman himself, and they also help him to escape from confrontations. These horses can also smell fear, and sense it.

Fearlings:
These creatures aren’t exactly made from Pitch’s black dream sand. They’re the souls of children in which Pitch had corrupted in the past. They help aid him in spreading nightmares to children across the world.

Shadows and Darkness:
Pitch has the ability to blend and mold into shadows. This includes objects and even other people’s shadows. But he does not possess them in any sort of way. He simply uses them for transportation. This includes the darkness, which he can blend into easily. But the downside to that is that extreme light hinders him almost powerless, and weakens him severely.

With the idea of restrictions, this is what I had in mind. He wouldn’t be able to create anything bigger than the palm of his hand. Maybe over time, he’d be able to create bigger objects, but nothing in which could endanger the entire Barge. He also wouldn’t be able to use the shadows to teleport himself around within the game’s setting, since that wouldn’t exactly be far to the Wardens and other Inmates.

If you guys have any other changes you’d like to include, lemme know! I’m very flexible with the limitations/restrictions on his powers.

Personality:
Pitch is a unique creature. While he seems to act cocky about his abilities, when he doesn’t have them, he becomes a cornered animal. He overreacts and lashes out, either physically or verbally at those who wish to oppose him. Being the Boogeyman is a hard job in itself. But when no one believes in you, and you don’t have your power which makes you who you are… it’s rough. But being in this new setting of the Barge, and being seen by everyone, it will be something for Pitch to take in. It’ll be a cultural shock for him, especially when he’s considered an inmate, and is overlooked by a Warden.

However, he will do whatever it takes to make the best of his situation. Pitch would try and make deals, and possibly use his enemies emotions and fears against them. If it benefits him in the end, he’ll do whatever he can. But he does like to have ‘fun’ every once in a while. Then again, Pitch’s type of ‘fun’ isn’t quite the same as Jack Frost’s or someone else’s. He takes joy in watching fear on people’s faces. He’d willingly watch a pack of hungry wild dogs chase an innocent child, and laugh.

Pitch tends to keep to himself. He seeks comfort in the dark and fear, because it is all that he has ever known. If people do offer him help, he’ll turn it down almost immediately. This is apparent at the end of the movie. The Guardians offer him a place with them, wanting to end on good terms with the Boogeyman. However, Pitch refuses it. To me, this makes me feel like Pitch doesn’t want to be weak again, like what happened to the end of the Dark Ages. No one helped him then, why should anyone help him now? Obviously, with the setting he’ll be thrust into, he’ll have to use a different strategy, and actually seek out some assistance and make connections, which is outside of his comfort zone. But I have a feeling he’d grow into it over time.

When faced with conflicts, Pitch fights with all of his ability. If anything, he does a bit of an overkill, by using all of his Nightmares to attack a single Guardian at times. Because of this, some people may think that the Boogeyman himself fears losing. Well, who wouldn’t? He is afraid of being cast aside as nothing, which is a constantly on his mind. With all his Nightmares around him, and other forms of fear, he can forget about that inner fear that he has, almost fooling himself into thinking that he won’t ever lose with this much power on his side.

He isn’t the sympathetic type when it comes to bad things happening to other people. Pitch is the one who causes bad things to happen, in dreams anyways. There is also the fact that when the Guardians came to be, Pitch had no one to fall back on when children stopped believing in him. Pitch had to lick his own wounds in this case and recover on his own. The boogeyman doesn’t receive sympathy all that well either. He keeps the thought of ‘looking weak’ in the back of his head. If someone were to show him any sort of sympathy, or even kindness, he’d side-eye it, thinking it’s some kind of plan against him, or see this act of kindness as something that would make him look weak in the eyes of others looking on.

Pitch rolls his eyes at the 'hero' types. He has dealt with the Guardians long enough to point the out. If met with one, he'd either brush them off, or play along with whatever they're yammering about at the time, be it about him doing something bad or of the like. Pitch does tend to show off a little too much when things are going his way, and it'll probably irk some onlookers. But at other times, when he's at his lowest points, he tries to reach out and befriend people like he did with Jack in the movie.

Deep down inside, Pitch does want to have a connection with someone, but it's hard or the spirit to do just that. He doesn't know how to kindle relationships in general, and he may seem awkward when going about it at first. After being alone for so long, he is almost unknown to the idea of having 'friends'. He's seen it happen from afar, but he's never established one himself.

Barge Reactions:
When Pitch first arrives, he will not be pleased at all. With his powers stripped down to nearly nothing, he’ll feel almost like a mortal. He was already beaten down once by the Guardians, and now he’s been reduced to being treated like a criminal. His powers being almost nonexistent will put a damper on his mood, big time. Plus, with people watching over him like hawks, he won’t like the idea of being monitored almost 24/7. He has spent most of his existence alone and in isolation, if you don’t count his Nightmares. Just the idea of people being around him is troubling to the spirit. Most of the time, when he does deal with people, it’s usually when they’re asleep, or they aren’t obvious to him being around. And with the idea that everyone can actually see him will be strange. In his world, mostly children and a few adults see him, depending on how much they fear and believe in the Boogeyman himself.

He’ll feel very uncomfortable, being in such close quarters with others. He isn’t used to people actually seeing him, let alone touching him, if that’s the case sometime down the road. Pitch will flinch and possibly lash out if someone were to get too close for comfort, to him. But he will have to learn to adapt to his new situations. Pitch will try to make connections, in order to survive on this Barge. After all, he’s coming into this unknowingly. Why not make some connections along the way, to benefit himself of course.

With the idea of floods and the ports they will be visiting in time, Pitch will be more interested in the world around him. Being free to explore at the ports will relax the spirit, but he'll still be annoyed at the fact that he has to be baby sat by his Warden. He'd probably try his best to sneak away from his Warden, oblivious of the repercussions of such an action. Flood will interest him a little, but if it harms him or alters him in any sort of way, he'll struggle with it. The last thing he wants is to be changed physically or mentally. He's only been one person all his life. The Boogeyman.

Path to Redemption:

I think the most possible way to get through to Pitch is for his Warden, or anyone else for that matter, is to show him that he can be more than just the Boogeyman. There is more to the world than just creating fear and nightmares. The idea that fear can be used as a teaching tool needs to be presented to him in some way, shape, or form. All he does is scare people because it creates fear. He doesn't understand that too much fear can only end up hurting people. Then again, he feels no remorse for it, even if he does take it too far.

I'm not saying that Pitch will be anti-social in this game, but he will need someone to nudge him out there to interact with others who are not like him. He'll be attracted to those of who have similar interests that he has. A major step towards redemption would be where Pitch is open to talking to anyone he meets. But that road will be a long one, since he's spent nearly a millennium by himself. Breaking out of that personal bubble of his will be a huge step for his character development. Not only that, but actually making true relationships along the way and creating friendships, seeing as how he's never really had a true friend, or even family for that matter, during all this time of his existence.

History:
Source: Here.

It is said that Pitch has been around for hundreds of years, possibly even older than the Man in the Moon who is in charge of all the Guardians. Before he was Pitch Black, he was once human. He had a family, and had a successful life. He was known for his great skills as an army general. It was all wonderful until he was overcome by nightmares and ‘fearlings’. They overtook him and he became Pitch Black, his memories of being human having vanished completely from his memory. All he knew was fear.

As time went on, Pitch stuck to the shadows of the world, invading the dreams of young children and feeding off their fear. He wanted to suck the sweet dreams from every child, and consume them in fear. Pitch wanted children to live in fear and terror. Fear was always a constant idea throughout the world. With fear, the Boogeyman would always be around.

The Dark Ages soon came around, and he was bathing in fear until legends and stories of other beings started to surface. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, and the Toothfairy… all of these Guardians instilled a hope in the children of the world. And pretty soon, the ‘Boogeyman’ was a distant memory as the children of the world became less frightened of the monster hiding under their beds at night. And with the decline of fear, and the belief of the Boogeyman, Pitch was slowly losing power. After the Guardians made their impressions on the children of the world, Pitch was slowly becoming invisible to the children. Pretty soon, very few people believed in Pitch.

Furious, Pitch cursed the Guardians and the Man in the Moon and planned for hundreds of years to get back at them. He was weak, and forgotten. For many years, Pitch’s home was the darkness and underground. He planned and schemed until he found the perfect opportunity to resurface once more.

Pitch made his first appearance to North (Santa Claus), which caused the jolly man to become startled. While he summoned all of the Guardians together, Pitch Black invaded the Tooth Palace of the Toothfairy, having kidnapped all of her helpers and the teeth of all the children of the world. In these teeth were memories in which children had of every moment of their childhood. If he could make them all forget the Guardians, perhaps he would have a chance in returning to power once more.

His next target was the Sandman. Having put fear into the hearts of many children at this point, Pitch was able to summon Nightmares (black horses/unicorns made of black sand) to attack him and the Guardians. With the Nightmares, Pitch was able to overcome the Sandman, and struck him down with an arrow, made with his black sand.

The death of the Sandman fueled the Guardians to take him head on. As the Guardians busy with Easter coming up, Jack set out to find the teeth which were stolen with Baby Tooth, one of the survivors from Pitch’s earlier invasion on the Tooth Palace. They find Pitch’s lair, under an old broken bed in the woods, and find all the fairies in cages. Pitch finds Jack and reminds him of his fears, of not being seen by the children of the world. He even offers back his teeth, which had his memories in them. He takes them, but before he can take down Pitch on his own, he gets transported back to the Easter Bunny’s warren. The eggs for the Easter hunt were destroyed by Pitch’s Nightmares, and in the process of returning back, Jack had lost Baby Tooth. Again, more children started to stop believing in the Guardians once more. It seemed as though Pitch’s plan was going smoothly.

Having felt horrible for his actions, Jack found himself in the Arctic circle, having been shunned by the remaining Guardians. Pitch appeared offering him a place under his wing, to get back at the Guardians. He felt as though they were in a similar boat. They both wished to be believed in. He explained to jack that they could rule with fear and cold. Jack refused to work with the Boogeyman, until Pitch revealed that he had Baby Tooth. He threatened to crush the small creature in his hand, unless Jack handed over his source of power; his staff. Jack willingly does so, but Pitch has other plans for Baby Tooth. He tossed her into the snow and took Jack’s staff, breaking it over his leg into two pieces. Using his power, he also smashed a wall of black sand into Jack, causing him to fall into a crevice in the ice with Baby Tooth. Pitch tossed the remaining pieces of his Staff down the crevice and headed off to spread more fear across the entire world.

Slowly, the small ‘lights’ of believers started to fizzle out. Pitch was on top of the world, until he saw that there was one last light he had to snuff out. He rushed to that last believer, ready to make him stop believing. Sadly, Jack started to make other children start to believe once more, in him and as well as the other Guardians. With the help of the children nearby, Jack and the Guardians were able to take down Pitch’s Nightmares, returning them to pleasant dreams made of golden sand. This was a trademark of the Sandman, and eventually, he returns once more.

The children laughed and played with one another in the snow. Pitch shouted at them, demanding them to listen to him, and to stop having fun. But when he approached one of them, they merely walked through him. He was not heard, nor was he seen. Frightened by this aspect, he tried to escape from the Guardians, but was only forced back under his ‘bed’ by his Nightmares, who fed off of their master’s fear instead.

Sample Journal Entry:
[The video feed flickers on. At first it doesn't look like anyone is there, until a pair of silver eyes pierce through the darkness. After some shifting, Pitch's face is highlighted by the limited light down on Level 0.]

This is what they consider to be punishment. Honestly, I could think of something better than this. [The spirit rolls his eyes as he leans back against the wall, behind the bench he's on in his cell. He crosses his arms and rests one knee over the other as he looks around at the interior of his cell. Pitch clicks his tongue, unimpressed.]

It's cute, but I'm certainly not learning my lesson in here. If anything, it's making things worse. I'm only growing more annoyed with each second I spend in here. But it's not enough to make me snap.

You underestimate how comfortable I am within the darkness, and being by myself. [Sure, he didn't have his Nightmares around to keep him company, but it was all oddly similar to his lair back home. Dark and quiet.]

I only have, what, two more days left down here? [He looks at his nails, his gaze dry, and his eyebrows perched high on his head.] Fine with me. I can deal with it. [He leans into the camera, smiling smoothly though, his voice like velvet, amused as he speaks into the camera. As he leans in, into more light, his silver eyes turn a bright gold.]

Next time, try a little harder, Warden.

[And the feed cuts out.]

Sample RP:

This place was almost too much for the spirit. Being in close quarters with others was something Pitch Black was no familiar with at all. He felt suffocated, even just in his cabin. He could hear voices piercing through the silence of the night, traveling through the walls and floor of his room. He sat currently on his bed, his legs pulled up to his chest.

His room was darker than most others. Save for one candle on his nightstand and the light that filtered through his single window. Even then, he had his ratty drapes pulled shut to limit the natural light in his room. Spending time in his room calmed the boogeyman. He took solace in the fact that he was in a familiar environment. Pitch closed his silver eyes and sighed deeply. His shoulders relaxed as he leaned in heavier against his knees.

His eyes snapped open however as a knock interrupted his moment of relaxation. Or as relaxed as anyone could be. Pitch lifted his head and turned his head towards the door. A muffled voice came from behind it. His warden. Great, he thought, Just what I need right now. The spirit didn't take time to register what the warden had to say. He was too busy rolling his eyes and thinking of ways to drive him away as he got up from his bed.

He swung his legs over the edge and approached the door, grumbling under his breath. Boney fingers gripped and turned the doorknob. Before he could snap any witty remarks to his warden, a handcuff was slapped onto his skinny wrist on the doorknob. His eyes widened and he opened his mouth to protest before he was roughly turned around, both hands behind his back. Another cold piece of metal wrapped itself around the boogeyman's wrist.

Pitch struggled, and tried his hardest he did. He may have been a powerful spirit before, but that was because he relied on his blacksand and Fearlings. Now. Now he had to rely on physical strength, which he didn't have much of in the first place. The warden easily over powered him, despite the man's protests. Pitch was turned back around, being lead out of his room and down the hall. Anger was roaring in his ears, and again, the words of the warden were drowned out. He was lead down the hall, being shoved here or there when he refused to move. But one set of words did catch his attention, and quieted the anger in his head.

"...Level 0..."

Special Notes:
I was wondering if the Admiral could hand wave the whole invisibility thing of Pitch's? To reiterate, it deals with people and their belief in him. If people believe in the boogeyman, they will be able to see, hear, and interact with him. This would put a major damper on his ability to interact with people. So I was hoping we could handwave that.

Thank you!
